My personal experience of caring and holidays with the disabled traveller spans over 20 years. My expertise in Sharm el Sheikh and knowledge of the area will, I hope, be an invaluable source of information for you.
Sadly, many Sharm guide books are out of date when it comes to disability travel in Sharm el Sheikh and South Sinai.
Accessibility is not standard, but it is not impossible and people are very helpful. Finding information about your hotel independently by e-mail is a good option or ask The BOOK.
Generally people answer positively without meaning to mislead you; unfortunately their lack of knowledge could affect the outcome of your holiday.

Ask other travellers with disabilities. The Thorn Tree and Trip Advisor forums are a good place for asking recent travellers and learning from their experiences, good and bad.

People in Egypt are very willing to help push you in your wheelchair or physically carry you and your chair, sometimes you may find this necessary. If you accept help, you must make sure they lift you and the chair correctly or you may end up head first in the sand.
- Explain to people how they can help you; this may involve sign language. Everyone thinks it is very easy and straightforward to manoeuvre a chair up and down stairs, through revolving doors and into lifts in Sharm.
- Do not be shy to show anyone the correct way to handle you properly. You will not only be helping yourself, you will be helping other people as well.
If you find a hotel that is particularly bad at handling any situation with special needs concerns please inform us, so that we may be able to offer our assistance and training.
-
If you have been promised at any stage something that has not been correct, you should complain immediately - once you return home it is too late.
-
If the room is not what you have been promised, or the hotel or trip is not suitable, as you were told, act immediately. Your tour operator and the hotel manager are the people to talk to.
Nobody wants you to be unhappy.
Do not plan too many trips in one day, the heat and terrain is tiring and the timing of trips is not always punctual. Trying to fit every trip and activity into one week is not easy for anyone. |
